This was our first time in Ocean City (OC) and it reminded us of being on the Jersey Shore or Myrtle Beach. The boardwalk scene was mainly made up of college student and young adults. We arrived to OC late in the evening without specific hotel reservations. We tried a couple of hotels on the beach before stumbling upon the Commander Hotel. Actually, the clerk at the Holiday Inn recommended the Commander. I was reticent about staying at a hotel whose name did not ring a familiar bell. Nonetheless, we decided this hotel maybe our only shot in the dark. The Commander had vacancy and was quite accommodating to us as we toured at least 4 guest rooms before deciding to stay. Based on the outstanding views that were offered we choose the Captains Suite to spend the next couple of days.
Before I begin to talk about the room I have to share that the day time clerk named Debi was exceptionally warm, genuine, and helpful. In fact, the staff (room cleaners) were pleasant. Everyone made you feel welcome being at the hotel. The rooms at the Commander were comfortable. The bed was exceptional comfortable. The room décor appeared to mimic a washed out Ralph Lauren feel with the nautical blue coloring. I understand the concept, but the room layout and color made you feel as if you were in a cramped ship cabin.
The bathroom was dated and needed some work. There had been an obvious leak in the celling which was visible. Perhaps they may want to change the ceiling tile to get rid of the water damage stain. While we very much wanted a room with a Jacuzzi, we were not pleased with the condition of the Jacuzzi. Since I was on vacation I wanted to leave my cleaning duties for home.
The hotel is situated in a convenient area, roughly mid-way on the boardwalk which makes for a nice center stroll from end to end on the boardwalk. Boardwalk traffic by the hotel was good; not overly crowded. The wifi in the room was temperamental.
The best feature of the room was the over sized, wrap around balcony which offered ocean, boardwalk, and city views. Waking up to a robust sunrise was quite enjoyable.
